Learning Journey to Singapore Art Museum (SAM)

Our art club members embarked on the Learning Journey to SAM on 29 September. The children had a tour of the exhibits in Learning Galleries 1 and 2 where the trainers engaged them in a discussion about contemporary art concepts. Mrs Ow-Yong and I accompanied the children in the junior group. We were impressed by the confidence displayed by them as they talked about their observations and views towards the artworks shown. Providing such an opportunity for the 'student voice' to be heard is crucial in art appreciation.

After a stimulating discussion at the Learning Galleries, we proceeded to an open space for our art-making session. I could feel the children's anticipation and excitement as they explored and experimented with an array of materials to create a self-portrait on a given piece of canvas. Watching the children communicate their ideas with one another and handle given materials with a lively curiosity is a joy.
As I walked around documenting the journey, I really enjoyed looking at the completed artworks. Everyone was unique, with interesting shape and pattern overlaps. As I listened to the children speak about their ideas, the humor in some of their artworks tickled me. I would like to conduct this activity for other pupils too. Exploration of materials is such a great way for children to make new discoveries.

Our group photos before departure and on our way home were fun-filled too. I look forward to more such excursions with the art club members again.

Here ae some pictures of our Seniors @ Work on 31 July. I simply love their colourful designs, don't you?

Printmaking with String

This is what the junior members did on 31 July . First, we spent time creating borders on our designs with strings. Now that the design are outlined with strings, we are now ready to create some prints. We were simply  delighted with the colourful outcomes!
